Food + Soju + Good Times
참숯골 (pronounced cham-soot-gol) is a famous Korean BBQ restaurant in the Gwanghamoon area. They charge over $50 per serving of beef so I haven’t had the privilege of eating their BBQ but their bibimbap is the best in the world. Yes I said it!
I like to get a little crazy with the hot red pepper paste.
For most people the meat is just one of many components in a bibimbap but for me it needs be the main character. And the meat at ChamSootGol is what makes this bibimbap better than the rest. They don’t give you the choice cuts they sell for $50 per serving, but they give you the fatty ends that were cut off from their Grade A beef; fat = flavor. Also the fatty pieces give off a lot of natural oil/grease and flavor that helps to mix your rice and vegetables.
The doenjang-jjigae at ChamSootGol is also my favorite. It’s small because they emphasis the thick-cut ingredients rather than the broth, kind of like Campbell’s soup vs Chunky soup. And they use a very fresh and firm tofu and I think that makes a world of a difference.
The bibimbap only costs KRW 9,000 and I forget how much they charge for the doenjang-jjigae, but it’s also a must try. I challenge anyone to eat the bibimbap here and argue it’s not the best they have had.
