한우리 – beef and noodle casserole

Beef and noodle casserole or 국수전골 is one of my favorite meals in Korea and I think Hanwoori does it the best!

It’s KRW 22,000 per person for the beef and noodle casserole but there are other variations that are more expensive.  I’ve only tried the beef and noodle here but the other items seem overpriced.

한우리 is a massive restaurant in Apgujung with 8 floors of seating.  The first floor is for regular diners and the floors above have rooms for birthdays, private parties, etc.  Don’t get freaked out if you walk-in and see the first floor empty, most of the customers are in the private rooms above.

It’s a similar setup to shabu-shabu but instead of you simmering individual pieces of vegetable or meat in the broth, they cook it all for you at the table.

After the meat and vegetables come to a simmer they add the hand-made noodles to the pot.  She also comes over with salt, pepper, minced garlic, and chilli powder and asks how you want it seasoned.  I just say regular but you can ask for no spicy.

The broth is absolutely delicious, great for hangovers.  The fresh hand-made noodles are soft yet chewy.  Beef and mushrooms, classic combo.  I only wish the scallions were cut smaller so they would be sweeter, when left in big chunks they retain the bitterness.

It’s a lot of food!  From the original pot you get 4 healthy bowls.  It would probably be best for three or four people to share the 2 serving order.  And after you are done with the noodle soup, you can ask them to make porridge, which is another delicious little treat!  Even if you are full, you should go for the porridge or 죽 (pronounced jook).

She already added one bowl of rice.  They charge you like 4 bucks per bowl of rice, ridiculous but I still pay for it.

WARNING: it is super hot!  It will burn the roof of your mouth if you don’t wait.  But it smells so good and you want to give it a try . . . torture!

I absolutely love this meal!  You get a soup, noodles, meat, and rice, all in one package.  It’s filling, its comfort food, and it’s great for hangovers.  Yeah, it’s a little overpriced but they cook the entire meal at your table using fresh ingredients.  The restaurant is big, clean and the service is very attentive.  I strongly encourage you to give this place a try.  It would also be a great place to bring visitors since there aren’t any “funky” ingredients; it would be agreeable with most pallets.

Rating:  8 out of 10.

interesting that you call 전골 a casserole. i always considered a casserole as something that’s baked.

I would have called it a hot-pot or stew but the menu said casserole, so I just rolled with it.
